On Friday, January 27th 2017, more than a hundred people gathered at the Ghana Embassy in Washington DC to bid farewell to Lt. General Joseph Henry Smith, outgoing Ghana Ambassador to the United States. The event was attended by many prominent people including Deputy Chief of Mission, Skido Achulo; Head of Defense Attache, Brigadier General Seidu Adam and representatives from the US State Department. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE NEW PRESIDENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF GHANA
A position paper based on proceedings of the 14th annual GPSF conference held in April 2016 is now available. As you would recall the theme for the conference was: A Critical Appraisal of Health Literacy in Africa; Challenges and Possible Solutions. This position paper puts forth recommendations on ways to improve Health Literacy in Ghana and Africa.
The GPSF continues to welcome highly enthusiastic and energetic individuals who are helping to establish local chapters in the different regions of North America. 4 chapters have already been established: Delaware Valley, Carolinas, New England, Arizona. Being actively involved in the local chapter is a great way to network and give back to the local community. Check out the GPSF Facebook page for further details. DONATION TO HOPEXCHANGE MEDICAL CENTER
The GPSF donated 47 large boxes of medical supplies to the Hope Xchange Medical Center located in Kumasi in October. These items included operating room supplies such as: drapes, gowns, dressing materials, skin prep, surgical trocars, surgical blades, etc. The GPSF covered the cost of shipping and collected and sorted the medical supplies for shipment.
Excitement continues to build for the upcoming 15th annual conference to be held April 21st – 23rd, 2017. The program will feature keynote speaker Dr. Idris Jide, Health Commissioner, Lagos State, Nigeria as well as representatives from the CDC, and other world renowned experts. There will be some exciting new features at next year’s conference, namely i) members will have the opportunity to do a 15minute presentation on their successful not-for-profit projects (please submit a synopsis to firstname.lastname@example.org ii) a workshop on scientific writing iii) a workshop/seminar for young physicians. Iv) conference will begin on the morning of Friday April 2ist v) welcome reception on Friday April 21st . This will be the last conference in Atlanta. The 15-year anniversary conference promises to be spectacular, don’t miss out!
Dr. Kwabena Boakye, executive secretary and co-lead GPSF-YP (young professionals) represented the GPSF at the 10th anniversary annual conference of the GDDA –UK (Ghanaian Doctors and Dentists Assoc., United Kingdom) in London, UK in October. We expect to engage in collaborative projects with our sister organization across the pond in the very near future.
Supports the mission of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons & non-profit health initiatives in Ghana by North America diaspora health advocates.
